Anaphylaxis is a rare but serious event and is diagnosed clinically. All anaesthetists should be familiar with an algorithm for treatment of anaphylaxis. Epinephrine should be given early in severe reactions. Delay in diagnosis or treatment can be fatal.

Beta blockers should be prescribed during the perioperative period unless contraindicated.
